      Hours: 15-20 hours per week, Wednesday-Friday and occasional evening and weekend work

      Compensation: $10 per hour

      The Burwell School Historic Site, a historic house museum located in Hillsborough, NC, preserves and interprets the history of its antebellum and Civil War era residents. The Burwell School Historic Site offers free docent-led and self-guided tours, a variety of cultural events, and engaging heritage education programs for children and young adults.

      Seeking a candidate with a B.A. or higher in History, Historic Preservation, Museum Studies, American Studies, or a related field. Seniors graduating this spring or graduate students who can accommodate the schedule are encouraged to apply. This position is a great opportunity for a candidate seeking to gain experience in the public history and museums field. The candidate should be self-motivated, organized, possess excellent communication skills, and have a working knowledge of American social and cultural history. Knowledge of nineteenth century history, women's history and African American history a plus. Must be comfortable interacting with the public and speaking to small and large groups. Candidate must be proficient in Microsoft Word, Outlook, PowerPoint, Excel, Publisher, and social networking sites.

      Job Description: Duties include conducting guided tours, opening/closing site and coordination of general maintenance of the site. Candidate will support various committees with historical research, assist with special events, develop and deliver children's heritage education programming, and produce publicity for special events. Candidate is responsible for site rental contracts, coordinating volunteers, collaborating on preservation projects, producing and publishing a biannual newsletter, creating and assisting with various exhibits, collaborating and assisting the Board of Directors and standing committees on an as needed basis, and assisting the executive director with day-to-day activities of the site.
