University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill, NC was chartered in 1789. Many of its founding trustees lived in Hillsborough, NC. Although women were not permitted to study at the university, there are Burwell School connections including Eliza N. Mitchell , whose father was a prominent professor, and Mary Anne Primrose whose son Marcus Cicero Stephens Noble was considered the premier educator at UNC in the late nineteenth century.
