Martha A. Brooks was born c. 1834, in Halifax County, VA.

Parents: James Faulkner Brooks (1805-1880) and Sarah Atkinson (1805-1860).
Siblings:
- two brothers, John Venable Brooks (1838-1900) and Samuel H. Brooks (b. 1838).
