Hillsborough Literary Association

From September through May, the meetings of the Hillsborough Literary Association (HLA) highlight the area's literary community through readings, book signings, dramatic interpretations of literary works, and the Children's Holiday Storytime.

The Hillsborough Literary Association was organized in January 1842 and revived 160 years later, in October 2002, by the Historic Hillsborough Commission as a fundraiser for the Burwell School Historic Site. The original Literary Association was heralded by The Western Carolinian of Salisbury as the first organization of its kind in the state and its membership included the town's most prominent citizens. Frederick Nash, the Association's first President, hoped that through their efforts, "the day is not far distant when Hillsborough will be as celebrated for its Literature, as it now is for the salubrity of its climate and the beauty of its scenery." Like its predecessor, the HLA meets Thursday evenings at twilight.

The HLA meets monthly at 7:30 p.m. at the Burwell School Historic Site. Light refreshments are served. Tickets are $12 and advance reservations are recommended. To make reservations, please contact us.

The Hillsborough Literary Association is sponsored in part through the generosity of the Mary Duke Biddle Foundation.

The 2009-2010 Season:

St. Matthew's Faith and the Arts Program
"How Can I Keep From Singing?" Thursday, January 28, 2008   7:30pm   $10

St. Matthew's Episcopal Church, 210 St. Mary's Rd. will be hosting the first of six special programs in the new Faith and the Arts series. "How Can I Keep From Singing?" are readings by Lee Smith paired with spirituals & hymns sung by the St. Matthew's Women's Singing Circle. The first program in this series is an evening of words: spoken and sung. Come hear Lee Smith's wonderfully nuanced and passionate voice as she reads from her works and the communal voice of the Singing Circle, as they sing from the heart and find the harmony within the song and amongst all. The Singing Circle began meeting about a year ago and has always included reading works of fiction to give context and meaning to the sacred songs being sung, songs which frequently came out of the mid 1800s.

The program will be followed by a reception and book signing. Tickets are $10 and can be purchased through The Burwell School, 919-732-7451, the church office, 919-732-9308, or at the door. Proceeds will benefit The Burwell School Historic Site and to support future St. Matthew's Faith and the Arts programming.
